Esports has quickly become a major part of gaming culture, and with the new season right around the corner, excitement is building. Coach Diamond is especially eager for the year ahead, hoping that he and his team can once again make their mark at the state level. Last year, two Ste. Gen players advanced to state, and this season, Diamond is aiming for just as many—if not more—to qualify.

Now entering its third year at Ste. Gen, the Esports program continues to grow under Diamond’s leadership. His philosophy is simple but effective: treat gaming like a classroom. Players are encouraged to think critically, sharpen their strategies, and continuously improve their skills.

While every player has their own favorite game, the team’s most popular choice is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Diamond says tournament participation depends largely on each player’s interests, making the program highly student-driven. Even so, Diamond ensures his athletes are prepared for every matchup, guiding them through practice and strategy. Looking ahead, one of his goals is to bring another coach on board and expand the variety of games offered in competition.

Though still relatively new at Ste. Gen, the Esports program has already built a strong reputation for success and school pride.

Varsity gamer Conner Hardin knows exactly why the program works. “I really enjoy the mix of competition and collaborating with my teammates,” he says. “It’s fun to go up against other schools and test my skills.” Conner adds that strategy plays a big role: the team studies tendencies and playing styles of opponents and then uses that knowledge to gain an edge.

Having gamed since he was five or six years old, Conner admits Esports gave him a new perspective. “I became serious about gaming when I joined the team,” he says.

With strong leadership, dedicated players, and a program on the rise, Ste. Gen Esports looks ready to take things to the next level this season.
