Coach Bonnell’s journey in wrestling began at the young age of six, and his passion for the sport has been a defining part of his life ever since. Now entering his 15th year as the head coach at Ste. Genevieve High School, Bonnell brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to fostering excellence both on and off the mat.

Building a Strong Team Culture
For Coach Bonnell, creating a positive and cohesive team culture is essential. By setting clear expectations for both athletes and parents, he minimizes conflicts and maintains focus on the team’s goals. When challenges do arise, Bonnell resolves them through respectful and constructive conversations. “Effort, attitude, and repetition are the keys to success in wrestling,” he emphasizes, ensuring that his athletes develop the discipline and mindset needed to excel.
Training for Success
A typical practice for Bonnell’s wrestling team is dynamic and purposeful, varying

based on the team’s schedule and upcoming competitions. Sessions typically last 2 to 2.5 hours and include a mix of drilling, live sparring, and strength and conditioning exercises. Wrestlers are encouraged to refine techniques that feel natural to them, gradually building a repertoire through consistent repetition.
“Regardless of what they’re doing, it’s going to take time and effort to get good,” Bonnell explains. His approach not only hones technical skills but also builds resilience, mental toughness, and camaraderie among his athletes.
A Legacy of Coaching
Bonnell’s coaching career began alongside his teaching journey, with early experience coaching at Farmington. In 2009, he accepted an offer from former Superintendent Mr. Stewart to join Ste. Genevieve’s teaching and coaching staff. Since then, he has dedicated himself to building a competitive and respected wrestling program.
Embracing Growth in Women’s Wrestling
As women’s wrestling continues to rise as the fastest-growing women’s sport in the nation, Coach Bonnell is fully supportive of its development. “Women’s wrestling isn’t going anywhere,” he says, acknowledging that perspectives may vary but celebrating the sport’s expansion and its impact on athletes.
A Commitment to Greatness
For Bonnell, coaching is more than a job—it’s a lifestyle. “Coaching never stops,” he says. He dedicates as much time as possible to his wrestlers, motivating them to push through challenges and reach their full potential. This season, Bonnell is laser-focused on helping his team achieve their goals, including winning a district championship.
With a passion for wrestling that has spanned decades, Coach Bonnell continues to inspire his athletes to strive for greatness, both as competitors and as individuals.
